Credit card acceptance

Dispensary credit card processing, explained honestly.

Most dispensaries still can’t take credit cards. Offering them sets you apart — and we make sure you understand exactly how it works before you do.

How it works.

A good fit for

  • Dispensaries losing sales to “cash or debit only”
  • Stores with higher average tickets
  • Delivery and curbside operations
  • Multi-location operators standardizing payments

Customers ask for it constantly: “Do you take credit?” For most dispensaries the answer is still no, which sends shoppers to the ATM, to a competitor or out the door. Being able to say yes is one of the clearest ways to stand out in a crowded market.

Credit acceptance in cannabis isn’t the same as in a coffee shop, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Sprout walks each client through how transactions are processed, the statement descriptor customers will see, the fees involved and the card-network and state rules that apply — in writing, before you commit — including the program’s limitations and what happens if it changes.

Before you sign anything

Questions to ask any cannabis credit provider.

Whoever you work with — including us — get clear answers to these before you commit:

  1. How is each transaction processed? Ask what the transaction is categorized as and who the merchant of record is.
  2. What will my customers see on their statement? Unfamiliar descriptors lead to disputes.
  3. What does it cost, all in? Rates, per-transaction fees, equipment, and any fee shown to customers.
  4. How and when are funds settled? Where the money lands, and how long it takes.
  5. What happens if the program changes? Ask how you’ll be notified, and what the backup plan is.

Questions

About credit card acceptance.

Can dispensaries really accept credit cards?

Some do, but it isn’t the same as ordinary card acceptance. Cannabis is still federally controlled, and the major card networks don’t permit cannabis sales to be processed as ordinary credit card purchases, so every workable option involves a specific structure. We explain the structure behind ours, in writing, before you decide.

Will my customers pay a fee?

That depends on the setup you choose. If any fee applies to customers, we’ll show you exactly how and when it’s disclosed to them before they pay.

What happens if a customer disputes a charge?

Disputes are handled through a defined process, and we help you respond with the right records. A clear statement descriptor and receipt help prevent disputes in the first place.

Can I offer credit alongside debit?

Yes. Most clients offer both, plus online pre-payment for pickup and delivery.
