| Debit card | Counter, curbside, delivery; online and phone pre-orders | Pays with their bank debit card | The most widely used card option in cannabis retail |

Why it’s different in cannabis
The provider matters more than the rate.
Cannabis is still federally controlled — even after April 2026 moved state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III, adult-use cannabis remains in Schedule I pending a separate review — and banks and card networks set their own rules for cannabis transactions. That has created a market full of workarounds — “cashless ATMs,” miscoded transactions, processors that don’t ask what you sell — that work until the day they don’t. When they stop, dispensaries lose card payments overnight, and sometimes the money in transit with them.
Sprout was started to be the opposite of that. Before you sign, we explain how your transactions are processed, what customers will see on their statements, what everything costs and what rules apply in your state — in writing. Then we pick up the phone when you need us.
Questions
About cannabis payments.
Can dispensaries accept card payments?
Yes. Many licensed dispensaries and delivery services accept debit cards, and some accept credit cards. Cannabis’s federal status is changing — since April 2026, state-licensed medical marijuana is in Schedule III while adult-use cannabis remains in Schedule I pending a separate federal review — and banks and card networks still set their own rules for cannabis transactions. That’s why the structure behind a payment solution matters. We explain ours in writing before you sign.
Is Sprout a “cashless ATM” provider?
No. Cashless ATM setups run a purchase as an ATM withdrawal, and card networks have shut them down repeatedly — sometimes overnight. We don’t sell setups that depend on a workaround staying unnoticed. See cashless ATM alternatives.
What does it cost?
It depends on your volume, how you sell and which services you use. Every rate and fee is laid out in writing before you sign, including any fee shown to customers, so you can compare us fairly with anyone else.
Will it work with my point-of-sale or ordering platform?
Often, yes. Tell us which systems you use and we’ll confirm how payments connect before you commit.
Who does Sprout work with?
Licensed cannabis businesses: retail dispensaries, delivery services, microbusinesses and multi-location operators. You’ll need to hold a valid state license to use our services.
