Do Michigan Dispensaries Take Credit Cards?

Published September 30, 2026 · 4 min read · By the Sprout Processing team

Michigan shoppers ask this constantly, usually in one of two forms: “do Michigan dispensaries take credit cards?” and “are Michigan dispensaries cash only?” The honest answer sits in between. Most Michigan stores aren’t cash only, but few take credit cards the way a grocery store does. Cash is accepted almost everywhere, debit is common, most lobbies have an ATM, and a smaller group of stores offer a credit option with conditions.

This guide covers what to expect in Michigan specifically, how to check a store before you drive over, and what Michigan owners can offer. For the national picture, see our main guide: do dispensaries take credit cards?

This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Rules and store policies change; confirm with the store and the state.

The short answer for Michigan

  • Cash: accepted at virtually every licensed store.
  • Debit card with PIN: accepted at many counters, sometimes with a small fee shown first.
  • ATM on site: very common in Michigan lobbies; expect a convenience fee on screen.
  • Pay ahead online: many stores let you order for pickup or delivery and pay at checkout or on arrival.
  • Credit card: available at some stores through a specific program, often with a fee. Not universal.

If you’re used to paying by card, debit is the closest match. For how debit works at the register, see do dispensaries take debit cards?

Why Michigan is still mostly cash and debit

Michigan has one of the largest cannabis markets in the country, with licensed medical provisioning centers and adult-use retailers across the state. Both are licensed and overseen by the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA). The CRA sets rules for licensing, inventory tracking, sales and delivery, but state rules don’t decide how Visa or Mastercard treat a purchase.

That’s the key point. Cannabis is still federally controlled. Since the Justice Department’s April 2026 order, FDA-approved and state-licensed medical marijuana products are in Schedule III, while adult-use cannabis remains in Schedule I pending a separate federal review. The major card networks don’t allow cannabis purchases to be processed as ordinary credit card sales, and that’s true in Michigan as much as anywhere. So a Michigan store that wants to offer credit has to use a specific program with its own rules, fees and statement descriptor.

That also explains why two stores a block apart can differ: each chooses its own payment providers.

What Michigan shoppers can use instead

Option How common in Michigan Tip
Cash Almost universal Remember sales and excise taxes on adult-use purchases add to the shelf total.
Debit with PIN Common Ask whether there’s a per-transaction fee.
Lobby ATM Very common Use a debit card, not a credit card, to avoid a cash advance.
Online or pre-order payment Varies Pay ahead, then show ID at pickup or on delivery.
Credit option Limited Ask how it works, what it costs and what name appears on your statement.

A credit card at an ATM is usually treated as a cash advance by the card issuer, with its own fee and interest from day one. Debit is the cheaper way to get cash.

How to check a Michigan store before you go

  1. Look at the online menu’s checkout. The payment methods listed there are what the store accepts right now.
  2. Call and ask: “Do you take credit or debit, and is there a fee?”
  3. Check the license. The CRA publishes licensee information, so you can confirm you’re dealing with a licensed store.
  4. Bring backup cash. Terminals go down occasionally, especially on busy weekends and holidays.

Be cautious if your total is rounded up to an even amount and appears as an ATM withdrawal. That usually means a “cashless ATM” setup; our explainer on what a cashless ATM is covers how it works.

Questions people also ask

Are Michigan dispensaries cash only?

Most aren’t. Nearly every licensed Michigan provisioning center or retailer takes cash, and many also take debit cards at the counter, have an ATM in the lobby or let you pay when you order ahead. A smaller number offer a credit card option through a payment provider. Check the store’s online menu or call before you go.

Can I use a credit card at a dispensary in Michigan?

Sometimes. A few Michigan stores offer a credit option through a program built for cannabis, usually with a fee shown before you pay. It isn’t the same as an ordinary credit card sale, and most stores still rely on cash and debit. Ask the store how its credit option works and what it costs.

Who regulates dispensaries in Michigan?

The Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), part of the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, licenses and oversees Michigan’s medical and adult-use cannabis businesses. Its website lists licensees, rules and consumer information.
